The USB Host Play makes for a quick, direct connection to other mobile devices, including flash drives and digital camcorders, bringing full multimedia compatibility into the living room. Most musical genres sounded better than we anticipated, given Bluetooth’s heavily compressed signal, though acoustic jazz still suffered from audible distortions in cymbals. Although the Sound Edit menu gives you access to the subwoofer level and the soundbar’s left/right balance, there are no treble and bass tone controls. Luckily the X810’s highs and mids are powerful and clear enough that we didn’t mind the lack of granular control.
Video quality, on the other hand, is very good for a home cinema system at this price. Our usual flotilla of test DVDs were greeted with realistic colour reproduction, fine amounts of detail without noise, and decent black levels. The controls on the remote are a little less than intuitive, but the documentation provides adequate help. On the back of the main unit, there’s a pair of screw holes for the mounting studs and bracket, though screws for mounting the bracket onto your wall are not included. The system weighs 16.4 pounds, so mounting it is a one-person job.

The Samsung HT-X810 was one of the coolest soundbars announced at CES 2008, mostly because of the 5.8GHz wireless subwoofer. At nearly $700, it isn’t an entry-level product, but it’s a lean, mean home theater system that can eliminate a lot of the clutter of more traditional setups. We connected our Samsung P2 portable media player to the soundbar’s USB port, but the soundbar only reads content from devices that support USB Mass Storage, so it was a no-go. Our Sony Walkman NWZ-S718F, however, worked fine, and we used the low-budget-looking menus displayed on our TV to navigate the player. The sound quality of the USB input was indistinguishable from that of the soundbar’s built-in CD player. From MP3 players to cell phones to PCs, the HT-X810 is all about seamless connections.

The Bluetooth features allow users to wirelessly connect to any Bluetooth-enabled device such as their phone, computer, or television. With a built-in radio tuner, the Samsung HT-X810R can tune into both AM and FM frequencies. This 2.1 channel home theater system is perfect for the customers who want something powerful and user-friendly with pristine sound. Firstly there is Bluetooth, so you can wirelessly connect devices that support stereo Bluetooth for audio playback.
You won't even need a receiver or amplifier — this sound bar has built-in amplification to power its six drivers for spacious, lifelike audio. You can mount the sound bar beneath your TV and place the wireless subwoofer anywhere in your room, keeping your installation neat and your room clutter-free. Firstly, we connected a Kingston USB memory stick, and put in an I Robot DVD in the drive to see basic features. I know iPods would not work via USB, but to confirm this, I plugged in a Nano, to no avail. But of course there is an audio in, so we can connect any and every media player via EP wire.
In keeping with the curvy looks of Samsung's past ranges, the HT-X810's main module has a rounded bottom bezel, sides and speaker grille. It's quite a wide unit at one metre across, and is designed to complement 42-inch screens. It's also wall-mountable with the ports at the rear angled so cables won't break off. In general, we favored the unit’s P-Bass setting over the Audio Upscale, which sounded a bit thin despite being intended to interpolate missing info in compressed music. The V-Sound setting worked well for most music and movies, giving the impression of a wider sound stage.
Connecting a Bluetooth device was an experience, and basically you need to control everything from the handset — effectively using the X810 like a headset. Pairing it was easy enough though, but the sound quality left something to be desired — Smashing Pumpkins MP3s carried a faint, rustling paper-like distortion. While the main unit is stylish, the subwoofer gets off less lightly — it's a black, rectangular box. But unlike the sub from Sony's DAV-IS10 system, it's not as fussy about placement, and given that it's wireless you can put it in the next room if you really want.
So it boils down to what you would prefer more - audio fidelity or looks and video performance. The wireless system that the subwoofer utilises is 5.8GHz, and not the more crowded 2.4GHz spectrum shared by microwaves, cordless phones and home networks. This means there's less likelihood of interference, and we found the sub connected to the main unit as soon as it turned on — we didn't need to do a thing. And Philips use a series of speakers to simulate surround sound by bouncing signals off rear walls, the Samsung does not.
